In newer versions of MySQL it now has a Preference Pane you can install, from which you can start/stop MySQL without going to/through the Terminal.

Hey Clifton -- Aaron pointed me here. Thanks for the tips. I got all the way to the point where you uncomment the line in httpd.conf, but there I am stuck.
No matter what I do, it won't save my changes cause it says I don't have permission. I even went so far as to temporarily give edit rights to "Everyone" in the Get Info box, but even then it wouldn't work. It behaves as if it is locked or read only for everyone.
Any ideas?

This database app also looks promising: http://araelium.com/querious
It costs money, but the UI looks a bit nicer than Sequel Pro.

Leave it to Clifton to make something so complicated so smooth and easy. Just gave it a try and it worked like butta.
Thanks for doing the legwork and gathering it into one place!

Great write-up. Thanks, I may give it a try. The start/stop issues with MAMP are annoying.
(FYI for the port issue in MAMP, you can always change the port to 80 and then you don't have to specify a port in the URL. That's what I do.)
